Living With Less to Make Room for More

I have been on a quest journey to living with less.  The more I work toward that goal, the more I realize how much of life is spent in organizing, moving around, and cleaning STUFF.

I have spent time over the last year and a half being in coversation with the kids about STUFF, and its impact on our lives… implementing the rule “if you bring something “new” home (even if it’s second hand, and/or FREE), then something has to also go OUT.

Having one child who attaches emotion to things is a little difficult.  (The wrapper something came in, obviously trash, is very difficult for her to part with).  So it has been a slow process in one bedroom in particular.  I won’t force them to get rid of things that belong to them.  We just work on them being able to let go.  My oldest has an amazing knack now for weeding out.  He loves the freedom of not having stuff piling around waiting to be taken care of.  (This can be an addicting feeling!)

But before I ramble on and on, the purpose of this post is to celebrate an accomplishment in this direction!  I have mentioned that Rich and I have traded rooms with Levi, as the 3 boys are going to have our large master bedroom.  We were going to just leave our clothes hanging in our old (HUGE) closet) and put shelves in the new little one.  No dresser.

Let me explain that our new closet is so small, you cannot hang a hanger on the rod straight, it has to be turned at an angle in order for the door to close.

But, behold my accomplishment!

new closet

From a 4 foot long clothing rod, to a 2 1/2 foot, and from a 6 drawer dresser to one shelf we share, and two crates each!  Our winter clothing, which used to remain in our closet all year, will be in a bin in the old closet.  Everything we need for everyday will fit in here.

Now, let me also explain that I LOVE CLOTHES.  I love to dress in a fairly trendy, (though frugal) way.  I have simple cut down my clothing to only the things that I love and wear every day.  I have four pair of jeans, 2 pair of shorts, and one pair of capri’s.  I have two skirts. One sun dress. I will need a few more summer tops this year, as I tossed some stained ones, and ones I just don’t wear because I don’t love them.

On a mission: to Live With Less, to Make Room for two more special boys who need a forever family.  We will probably find we have more room here than we thought! LOL!

Disclaimer: I am behind on laundry, so what you are seeing is not ALL our clothing… but I am determined only to keep what will fit in this closet- the crates still have room! :)   Less clothing means less laundry to do, too!
